Hydroxylated by phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH, [[bh4_cycle]]-dependent) to tyrosine — the [[catecholamine_synthesis]] precursor. PAH deficiency causes phenylketonuria (PKU). Precursor to adrenaline, [[norepinephrine]], [[dopamine]]; also to melanin via tyrosinase.
