Incorporated into coenzyme A (CoA) and acyl carrier protein (ACP). CoA is required for all acyl-group transfer: TCA cycle (acetyl-CoA entry), fatty-acid synthesis/oxidation, cholesterol and steroid synthesis, N-acetylation of drugs. Deficiency is rare because of ubiquitous distribution in food.

Pantethine (synergistic): Both feed the CoA pool; pantethine is closer to CoA, pantothenate is cheaper. No need to co-supplement.
