Ventral Posterior Nucleus (VPN)

A major sensory relay nucleus in the thalamus, receiving somatosensory information (touch, temperature, pain, proprioception) from the body and face.

Key Functions:

  • Relays somatosensory information to the primary somatosensory cortex.
  • Processes touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception.
  • Comprises the ventral posterior lateral (VPL) and ventral posterior medial (VPM) nuclei.
