Ventral Posterior Nucleus (VPN)
A major sensory relay nucleus in the thalamus, receiving somatosensory information (touch, temperature, pain, proprioception) from the body and face.
Key Functions:
- Relays somatosensory information to the primary somatosensory cortex.
- Processes touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception.
- Comprises the ventral posterior lateral (VPL) and ventral posterior medial (VPM) nuclei.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Thalamus (part of)
- Primary Somatosensory Area (projects to)
- Spinal Cord (receives ascending sensory tracts from)
- Trigeminal Nuclei (receives facial sensory input from)
