Medulla Oblongata
The lowest part of the brainstem, continuous with the spinal cord, controlling vital autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure, and relaying sensory and motor signals.
Key Functions:
- Regulates vital autonomic functions (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure).
- Controls reflexes such as coughing, sneezing, vomiting, and swallowing.
- Relays sensory and motor signals between the spinal cord and higher brain centers.
- Contains cranial nerve nuclei (IX, X, XI, XII).
