Nucleus Ambiguus
A motor nucleus located in the medulla oblongata, containing the cell bodies of motor neurons that innervate the muscles of the pharynx, larynx, and soft palate, important for swallowing and speech.
Key Functions:
- Controls muscles involved in swallowing, speech, and breathing.
- Provides motor innervation to the pharynx, larynx, and soft palate.
- Contains preganglionic parasympathetic neurons for the heart (part of vagus nerve).
