Cerebellum
A large structure located at the back of the brain, inferior to the cerebral hemispheres, primarily responsible for coordinating voluntary movements, balance, posture, and motor learning.
Key Functions:
- Coordinates voluntary movements (e.g., balance, posture, speech).
- Essential for motor learning and adaptation.
- Maintains equilibrium and muscle tone.
- Processes sensory information related to movement.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Cerebral Cortex (receives input from, sends output to via thalamus)
- Brainstem (connects to)
- Spinal Cord (receives proprioceptive input from)
- Cerebellar Cortex (outer layer)
- Deep Cerebellar Nuclei (dentate, interposed, fastigial)
- Motor Control (critical for precision and coordination)
