Cerebellar Cortex
The highly folded outer layer of the cerebellum, containing most of its neurons and organized into distinct functional zones, responsible for processing and integrating motor and sensory information.
Key Functions:
- Processes and integrates motor and sensory input.
- Crucial for motor learning, coordination, and timing.
- Contains specialized Purkinje cells, which are the sole output of the cortex.
- Organized into longitudinal zones (vermis, intermediate, lateral hemispheres).
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Cerebellum (outer layer of)
- Folia (surface folds)
- Purkinje Cells (major neurons within)
- Deep Cerebellar Nuclei (dentate, interposed, fastigial) (projects to)
- Motor Control and Learning (central to)
