Cerebral Cortex
The outermost layer of the cerebrum, responsible for higher-level functions such as thought, perception, language, memory, and voluntary movement.
Key Functions:
- Perception and interpretation of sensory information.
- Execution of voluntary motor commands (primary motor area).
- Language processing (Broca's area, Wernicke's area).
- Cognition, memory, learning, and consciousness.
- Divided into frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Frontal Cortex
- Parietal Cortex
- Temporal Cortex
- Occipital Cortex
- Thalamus (receives and sends projections)
- Basal Ganglia (interacts with for motor control)
- Cerebellum (interacts with for motor coordination)
- Limbic System (interacts with for emotion and memory)
