Primary Somatosensory Area (S1)

A region in the parietal cortex, specifically the postcentral gyrus, responsible for processing primary somatosensory information such as touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception from the body.

Key Functions:

  • Processes primary somatosensory information (touch, pressure, temperature, pain, proprioception).
  • Receives input from the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus.
  • Arranged somatotopically (sensory homunculus).
