Primary Somatosensory Area (S1)
A region in the parietal cortex, specifically the postcentral gyrus, responsible for processing primary somatosensory information such as touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception from the body.
Key Functions:
- Processes primary somatosensory information (touch, pressure, temperature, pain, proprioception).
- Receives input from the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus.
- Arranged somatotopically (sensory homunculus).
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Parietal Cortex (located within)
- Thalamus (receives input from ventral posterior nucleus)
- Spinal Cord (receives ascending sensory pathways from)
- Sensory Perception (key for)
