Positive side chain — substrate for collagen post-translational hydroxylation (lysyl oxidase → cross-links), carnitine biosynthesis (trimethyl-Lys as substrate), and histone methylation/acetylation. Competes with arginine for CAT-1 transport — the mechanism behind its HSV suppression (HSV replication is Arg-dependent).
