One of three BCAAs; catabolised extrahepatically in skeletal muscle via BCKDH. Glucogenic + ketogenic (produces both acetyl-CoA and succinyl-CoA). Activates mTORC1 less potently than leucine. Component of the muscle-catabolism protective BCAA pool during fasting or endurance exercise.
