Monel 400
Nickel-copper alloy resistant to sea water and high-temperature steam.
Core Principles & Analysis
Created in 1905 and named for International Nickel Company president Ambrose Monell, it was one of the first commercial nickel alloys.
Its roughly 2:1 nickel-copper ratio mirrors the natural Sudbury ore it was first smelted from and resists seawater, brine, and hydrofluoric acid.
Monel sheet roofed New York's original Pennsylvania Station, and the alloy remains standard for marine propeller shafts and pump impellers.
