Precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy for high-temperature jet engines.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Patented by Herbert Eiselstein of the International Nickel Company in 1962, it is strengthened mainly by gamma-double-prime Ni3Nb precipitates.
• It retains useful strength to about 700 °C, making it the most widely used superalloy for jet-engine turbine discs, shafts, and fasteners.
• Unusually weldable for a superalloy, it suits additive manufacturing — SpaceX 3D-prints SuperDraco rocket engine chambers from it.
