Category: lipid
Aliases: DPA, n-3 DPA, 22:5 ω-3, clupanodonic acid
22:5 ω-3 PUFA positioned between EPA (20:5) and DHA (22:6) in the ω-3 elongation/desaturation pathway. Retroconverts to EPA in humans and is a direct substrate for resolvin and protectin biosynthesis; preferentially incorporated into platelets and vascular endothelium. Typically a minor component of fish oil (~1–5% of EPA+DHA) but enriched in seal oil and in some green-lipped-mussel preparations. Primary human data are epidemiologic (plasma n-3 DPA inversely associated with CV events) rather than pharmacokinetic.
