Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin)

Category: nutrient-panel

Aliases: Vitamin B-12, Cobalamin, Vitamin B12

Pharmacological Mechanism

Essential cofactor measured as total vitamin B-12, summing the cobalamin vitamers found in food — chiefly adenosylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin, with methylcobalamin a minor contributor. Required by methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. Food panels report the total; supplements name the specific vitamer they contain.

Notes

Panel measurand rather than a single administered substance. Added when nutrient rows that reported this measurement were found filed under the slug of one specific species.
