Xanthophyll carotenoid — concentrated in retinal macula where it filters blue light + scavenges singlet oxygen. AREDS2 trial showed reduced progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration with lutein + zeaxanthin (replacing the unsafe-in-smokers β-carotene).
