Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (Organelle)
A network of interconnected membranes within eukaryotic cells, involved in lipid synthesis, detoxification of drugs and poisons, and calcium ion storage.
Key Functions:
- Synthesizes lipids, phospholipids, and steroids.
- Detoxifies drugs and metabolic byproducts.
- Stores and releases calcium ions for cellular processes.
- Lacks ribosomes on its surface.
