Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
A network of membranes studded with ribosomes, involved in the synthesis, folding, modification, and transport of proteins destined for secretion or insertion into membranes.
Key Functions:
- Synthesizes proteins destined for secretion, insertion into membranes, or delivery to organelles.
- Folds and modifies newly synthesized proteins.
- Site of N-linked glycosylation.
- Houses ribosomes for protein synthesis.
