Specialized mechanoreceptor cells located in the skin (epidermis), forming Merkel cell-neurite complexes that are sensitive to light touch and pressure.
Key Functions:
- Detects light touch, pressure, and texture.
- Forms a complex with sensory nerve endings.
- Plays a role in tactile discrimination.
