Schwann Cell
Glial cells of the peripheral nervous system that form the myelin sheath around axons, insulating them and enhancing the speed of nerve impulse conduction.
Key Functions:
- Forms myelin sheath around axons in the PNS.
- Increases the speed of nerve impulse conduction.
- Aids in regeneration of damaged axons in the PNS.
- One Schwann cell myelinates a single segment of an axon.
