Stratum Basale Cell
The deepest layer of the epidermis, composed of a single layer of cuboidal or columnar epithelial cells (basal cells) that are continuously dividing and responsible for regenerating the epidermis.
Key Functions:
- Undergoes continuous cell division to produce new keratinocytes.
- Anchors the epidermis to the underlying dermis.
- Contains melanocytes and Merkel cells.
