Cells located in the epidermis of the skin, responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that determines skin and hair color and provides protection against UV radiation.
Key Functions:
- Synthesizes melanin pigments (eumelanin and pheomelanin).
- Transfers melanin to surrounding keratinocytes.
- Protects the skin from UV radiation damage.
