Zirconium-based amorphous metal glass with ultra-high yield strength.
Core Principles & Analysis
Vitreloy 1, developed at Caltech in 1993, was the first metallic glass castable in centimetre-thick sections at cooling rates near 1 K/s.
With no crystal lattice or dislocations, it springs back elastically to about 2% strain, roughly double that of conventional crystalline alloys.
Bulk metallic glass flew on NASA's Genesis spacecraft as solar-wind collector material and reached consumers in Liquidmetal golf club heads.
