Fused Quartz Glass

High-purity silica glass with near-zero thermal expansion coefficient.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Its thermal expansion coefficient is only about 0.55 ppm/°C, so red-hot fused quartz can survive being plunged into water.
• It transmits ultraviolet light down to roughly 180 nm, making it the standard for UV lamps and photolithography optics.
• Fused quartz crucibles hold the molten silicon during Czochralski growth of semiconductor crystals.
