High-purity silica glass with near-zero thermal expansion coefficient.
Core Principles & Analysis
Its thermal expansion coefficient is only about 0.55 ppm/°C, so red-hot fused quartz can survive being plunged into water.
It transmits ultraviolet light down to roughly 180 nm, making it the standard for UV lamps and photolithography optics.
Fused quartz crucibles hold the molten silicon during Czochralski growth of semiconductor crystals.
