Grey Cast Iron

Cast iron with graphitic microstructure, high damping capacity, and thermal conductivity.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Its fracture surface looks grey because carbon precipitates as interconnected graphite flakes during solidification.
• The graphite flakes give it roughly ten times the vibration-damping capacity of steel, favoring it for machine-tool bases and engine blocks.
• Graphite expansion during freezing offsets shrinkage, making grey iron one of the easiest and cheapest metals to cast accurately.
