Core Principles & Analysis
Formed in 2002 and launched in December 2003, the UniProt Consortium united Amos Bairoch's manually curated Swiss-Prot (created in 1986), EMBL-EBI's automated TrEMBL, and Georgetown/NBRF's Protein Information Resource (heir to Margaret Dayhoff's 1965 Atlas).
UniProt Knowledgebase (UniProtKB) is split into UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot — over 569,000 expert-reviewed entries with curated catalytic sites, post-translational modifications, and disease mutations — and UniProtKB/TrEMBL covering over 245 million translated coding sequences.
Since July 2021, UniProtKB entries link directly to experimental wwPDB structures, AlphaFold2 predicted 3D models, ChEMBL bioactivity records, and IUPHAR Guide to Pharmacology receptor classifications.
