Originally developed as StARlite by Inpharmatica Ltd. (later Galapagos NV) and acquired for EMBL-EBI in 2008 by John Overington's group with a Wellcome Trust award, ChEMBL launched publicly in 2009–2010.
ChEMBL manually abstracts primary medicinal chemistry journals to link 2D chemical structures with standardized quantitative bioactivity endpoints (Ki, Kd, IC50, EC50), functional cell assays, and in vivo pharmacokinetic parameters.
In addition to small-molecule structure–activity relationships, ChEMBL curates clinical development phases, FDA-approved drug mechanisms of action, black-box safety warnings, and biotherapeutic drugs.
