Supraoptic Nucleus (SON)

A nucleus in the hypothalamus containing large neurosecretory neurons that produce vasopressin (ADH) and some oxytocin, which are then released from the posterior pituitary gland.

Key Functions:

  • Produces vasopressin (ADH), regulating water balance.
  • Produces a smaller amount of oxytocin.
  • Involved in osmoregulation and blood pressure control.
