Supraoptic Nucleus (SON)
A nucleus in the hypothalamus containing large neurosecretory neurons that produce vasopressin (ADH) and some oxytocin, which are then released from the posterior pituitary gland.
Key Functions:
- Produces vasopressin (ADH), regulating water balance.
- Produces a smaller amount of oxytocin.
- Involved in osmoregulation and blood pressure control.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Hypothalamus (located within)
- Pituitary Gland, Posterior (releases hormones produced here)
- Vasopressin (ADH)
- Oxytocin
- Fluid Balance (key regulator)
