Hypothalamus
A small but vital region of the diencephalon located below the thalamus, playing a crucial role in regulating essential body functions, including hormone release, hunger, thirst, sleep, and body temperature.
Key Functions:
- Regulates the autonomic nervous system.
- Controls hormone release from the anterior and posterior pituitary.
- Manages body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sleep-wake cycles.
- Involved in emotional responses and motivated behaviors.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Diencephalon (part of)
- Thalamus (located below)
- Pituitary Gland, Anterior (controls via releasing/inhibiting hormones)
- Pituitary Gland, Posterior (produces hormones released by)
- Limbic System (interacts with for emotion)
- Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) (circadian rhythm pacemaker)
- Mammillary Bodies (part of)
