Iron Bisglycinate

Category: mineral

Aliases: Ferrous bisglycinate chelate, Fe bisglycinate, Ferrochel

Pharmacological Mechanism

Fe²⁺ chelated to two glycine molecules in a neutral ring structure. The chelate is absorbed via PEPT1-type peptide transporters rather than DMT1, sparing it from luminal phytate/tannin chelation and from competition with Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Mn²⁺. SUSTAIN (Hurrell 2004) reports 2–3× higher relative bioavailability vs ferrous sulfate in high-phytate matrices with substantially less GI irritation. Same hepcidin gating as all oral iron; same every-other-day absorption advantage (Moretti 2015).
