Specialized smooth muscle cells in the afferent arteriole of the kidney, responsible for synthesizing, storing, and secreting renin.

Key Functions:

  • Secretes renin in response to decreased blood pressure or sodium levels.
  • Part of the juxtaglomerular apparatus.
  • Plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.
