Oganesson is a synthetic chemical element named after Russian nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, element 118.

Oganesson was created at Dubna between 2002 and 2005 by fusing calcium-48 with californium-249, after a 1999 Berkeley claim of element 118 was retracted when its data proved fabricated.
Named in 2016 for physicist Yuri Oganessian, it made him only the second person, after Glenn Seaborg, honored with an element name during his lifetime.
Only about five atoms have ever been detected; oganesson-294 decays with a half-life near 0.7 milliseconds, and relativistic calculations predict this nominal noble gas is actually a reactive solid.
