Darmstadtium is a synthetic chemical element named after the city of Darmstadt, Germany.

Darmstadtium was created in November 1994 at GSI by Sigurd Hofmann's team, which fused nickel-62 with lead-208 to detect a handful of atoms.
It is named after Darmstadt, Germany, the city hosting the GSI heavy-ion laboratory, and was the first of three elements from GSI's mid-1990s discovery streak with roentgenium and copernicium.
Its most stable known isotope, darmstadtium-281, has a half-life of roughly ten seconds and is most readily obtained as a decay product in flerovium decay chains.
