Tense & Aspect

Grammar’s two clocks: tense locates an event in time, aspect describes its shape and completion.

Tense answers "when"; aspect answers "ongoing, completed, or habitual".
Mandarin has no grammatical tense but marks aspect with particles like 了 and 过.
English "I ate" versus "I have eaten" is an aspectual contrast many learners never fully tame.
