Rutin

Category: flavonoid

Aliases: Quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, Rutoside, Sophorin, Vitamin P

Pharmacological Mechanism

Rutinoside (rhamnose-glucose) of quercetin. Cannot be absorbed intact — requires colonic microbial α-rhamnosidase to liberate quercetin-3-glucoside and then aglycone. Erlund 2000 showed Cmax of circulating quercetin after rutin is ~3× lower and Tmax 8× later than after equimolar quercetin aglycone, with terminal t½ ~11–28 h dominated by enterohepatic recycling of conjugates. All pharmacological activity in vivo is attributable to quercetin and its sulfate/glucuronide metabolites.
