Pharmacological Mechanism

OTC antacid + dietary calcium supplement — neutralizes gastric acid (CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2). Also used to bind dietary phosphorus in chronic kidney disease. Acid rebound after chronic use; constipation common.
