Pharmacological Mechanism

Hepatic alcohol-dehydrogenase + aldehyde-dehydrogenase two-step conversion to BHB (R-isomer conversion predominates). Also directly inebriating at high doses — shares ADH pathway with ethanol. Cost-effective BHB precursor used in some research formulations.
