Adenosylcobalamin is one of the two bioactive B12 coenzymes (the other being methylcobalamin). Carries a 5'-deoxyadenosyl ligand on the central cobalt and is the cofactor for mitochondrial methylmalonyl-CoA mutase — the enzyme that converts (R)-methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, committing odd-chain fatty-acid and branched-chain-amino-acid catabolism into the TCA cycle. Deficiency elevates serum/urinary methylmalonic acid (MMA), a sensitive marker. Bypasses the intracellular cblA/cblB adenosyltransferase steps needed to activate cyanocobalamin or hydroxocobalamin.
