Core Principles & Analysis
DuPont commercialized Nomex in 1967; its meta-linked aromatic chains have no melting point and char rather than drip when burned.
In a flash fire the fiber swells and carbonizes into an insulating char, buying escape time for firefighters and racing drivers.
Calendered Nomex paper is folded into lightweight honeycomb cores for aircraft interiors and serves as transformer insulation.
