Scutum (The Shield)
Small equatorial constellation, the only one named for a national hero.
Core Principles & Analysis
Hevelius created it in 1683 as Sobieski's Shield, honouring King John III of Poland after the relief of Vienna.
At 109 square degrees it is the fifth-smallest constellation.
