Splittings in the electronic energy levels of atoms, molecules, and ions due to electromagnetic multipole interaction between the nucleus and electron clouds.
In atoms it arises from the nuclear magnetic dipole moment interacting with the magnetic field of the electrons, plus the nuclear electric quadrupole interaction.
It is the smallest level of spectral structure, beyond fine structure, and grounds the caesium transition that defines the SI second.
