Aeneid
Virgil's national epic of Aeneas's flight from Troy and founding destiny, Rome's answer to Homer.
Core Characteristics
- Composed between 29 and 19 BC at Augustus's patronage; Virgil ordered it burned unfinished, and Octavian's publication overrode the wish.
- Its first six books echo the Odyssey's wanderings, the last six the Iliad's war.
- Links Rome's destiny to divine will through Aeneas, son of Venus, forefather of the Julian line.
