Drum Kit

One player, a whole percussion section: the pedal-driven assembly that powers jazz, rock, and funk.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Ludwig’s 1909 bass-drum pedal let one musician replace a marching section — the kit was born.
• The hi-hat matured in the 1920s and became jazz timekeeping’s heartbeat.
• A standard kit is a hybrid: drums plus cymbals, played with all four limbs independently.
