Timbre

The color of a sound — the overtone recipe and attack that tell a trumpet from a violin on one note.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Instruments playing the same pitch differ in the relative strengths of their harmonics.
• The attack transient matters enormously: recordings with onsets clipped off make instruments hard to identify.
• Synthesizers sculpt timbre directly by drawing the spectrum and envelope by hand.
