1971 reformulation of Strassen's 2×2 scheme that keeps the 7 multiplications but cuts the number of matrix additions.

Discovered by Shmuel Winograd in 1971, it computes Strassen's 2×2 product with the same 7 multiplications but fewer matrix additions.
Winograd's form appeared in 'On multiplication of 2×2 matrices', Linear Algebra and Its Applications 4(4), pp. 381–388 (1971).
Winograd went on to co-author the asymptotically faster Coppersmith–Winograd matrix multiplication algorithm.
