The square consonantal script of the Hebrew Bible, grown out of Aramaic after the exile.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Adopted from Imperial Aramaic around the 6th century BC, replacing Paleo-Hebrew.
• Five letters take final forms at the ends of words.
• Vowel points were added by the Masoretes from about 600 AD to fix the reading tradition.
