Pancreas

The glucose thermostat's organ. The pancreatic islets read blood sugar and answer with insulin or glucagon — the two-hormone switch that keeps fuel in band.

Primary Role
Endocrine control of fuel metabolism
Metabolic Pathways
Insulin and glucagon secretion coupling to glucose homeostasis
Energy Budget
Islets are 1-2 percent of organ mass, all of its endocrine work
Key Cell Types
Beta cells, alpha cells, Delta cells

Structure & Metabolism

A million islets of Langerhans scatter through the exocrine sea, each a micro-organ with its own vessels and paracrine geometry: beta cells at the core, glucagon-making alpha cells at the rim, somatostatin delta cells between. The islet reads glucose through the beta cell's glucokinase sensor — the same enzyme the liver uses, tuned here as a meter. The digestive majority of the organ is a separate story at pancreas (exocrine).
