Paradoxical mechanism: undenatured type II collagen delivered orally induces oral tolerance to the native cartilage epitope, reducing autoimmune attack on joint cartilage in OA / RA. Completely different mechanism from hydrolysed collagen peptides (which supply amino acid substrate). 40 mg/day produces the effect; increasing the dose defeats the tolerance induction.
