Sulforaphane

Category: polyphenol

Aliases: 1-Isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl)butane, SFN

Pharmacological Mechanism

Released from glucoraphanin by the enzyme myrosinase (from plant or gut microbiota) upon chewing/processing — sulforaphane is the active isothiocyanate. Potent Nrf2 activator: alkylates KEAP1 cysteines → disinhibits Nrf2 → transcription of phase II detoxification / antioxidant genes (glutathione synthesis, NQO1, HO-1). Also HDAC inhibitor at high concentrations.

Half-Life (t½)
