Anionic phospholipid of the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. Externalised on apoptotic cells as the 'eat me' signal for macrophage recognition. Cognitive rationale: membrane fluidity preservation in aging neurons, modulation of ACh release, and cortisol-lowering effect during exercise / stress (300–800 mg/d acute).
